What are the principles of design (define each in your own words)?
Principles of design are the concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition.
- Repetition - repeating some aspect or element of the design through out the design
- Proportion/scale - relative size and scale of the various elements in a design
- Balance - distribution of heavy and light elements
- Emphasis - stressing of a particular object in focus
- Unity - "wholeness" feeling that all elements belong together
- Variety - pertains to the differences and diversity, makes a work of art interesting
- Figure - shape
- Ground - surrounding area around a figure
- Rhythm - organized movement in space and time
- Contrast - occurs when two related elements are different
